Obituary For Justine Sammarco

Justine Sammarco, 93, Patton passed away April 13, 2024 at home surrounded by her loving family. She was born March 29, 1931 in Krasno, Czechoslovakia, the daughter of Joseph and Dorothy (Cimbora) Kormanec. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, John and Andrew Kormanec. She is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, John Sammarco, children: John J. (Frances Harpst), Pittsburgh; Janet (Scott) Hoover, Duncansville; Paula Sammarco (Robert Cass), Nahant, MA; Dan (Paula), Patton; Lynn Sammarco, Johnstown; Timothy (Jodi), Breinigsville, PA; grandchildren: Lindsy, Brett (Morgan), Lea, Sara, Hailey, Katie, Chloe; brother, Joseph Kormanec, OH; sister, Irene (Mike) Grimes, Homer City and numerous nieces and nephews. Justine came to America as a child from Czechoslovakia, arriving with her mother by boat to Ellis Island. She graduated from Ebensburg High School and worked at the County Courthouse until her marriage to John “Cheve” Sammarco of Patton. Justine and “Cheve” raised a close-knit family with six children, who were everything to them. She was the best mother anyone could ask for. She delighted in watching her grandchildren in various activities, had a wonderful sense of humor, loved watching the Pittsburgh Pirates and shopping with her daughters. Mom was famous for her “Pigs in the Blanket”, fried chicken and nut roll. She always enjoyed her long talks with her “Favorite Sister” Irene; and looked forward to the visits from her and niece, Lori. She also enjoyed the weekly calls from her brother, Joe. The family would like to thank Mom’s caregivers: Kayleen, Kathy, Judy, Jeanie, and Brenda. These angels made it possible to keep her at home. We couldn’t have done it without them and are forever grateful. Thank you also to Pinnacle Hospice, Nicole, Amanda, and Tara. The family would also like to thank our neighbors, John and Jude Berish, for their visits, gifts, and food; and our neighbor Valerie Kovall for the food, visits and always thinking of Mom. We are deeply touched and grateful for all that you have done over the years. We love you “Mum”! You will be forever in our hearts. “We are family!” Justine was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Patton and the Sons and Daughters of Italy, Patton. At Justine’s request, there will be no visitation. Family and friends are invited to attend the funeral Mass 11:00 am Monday, April 22, 2024 at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Patton by Rev. Justin Pino. Arrangements are under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home, Inc., Patton. Interment St. Mary’s Cemetery, Patton. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Patton Public Library, Patton Park, Patton Fire Company, and Queen of Peace Church in memory of Justine. What a light Aunt Justine was in our family! She was always so sweet, so bright and cheerful. John Paul and I loved talking with her, and listening to her stories of the family from long ago. All the Sammarco children are a testament to the beautiful spirit of your Mom (and Uncle Cheve too!). You all have been amazing caregivers, and have honored your Mom (and Dad!) in such a loving and remarkable way. What a blessing you were to her, and what a blessing she was to all who knew and loved her. We will miss her. Love and prayers to all. John Paul, Lorrie, and Alex Kormanec

John and family - I never met your dear mama but no doubt she was a true gem. All I have to do is witness you - your love and devotion. No doubt the fruit does not fall far from the tree. Heartfelt sympathy. Thoughts and prayers to you all. Linda Cardella
