Obituary For George D. Popson

George D. Popson, 73, Patton passed away November 22, 2021 at Miners Medical Center. He was born April 5, 1948 in Penn Run, son of Martin J. and Margaret V. (Strong) Popson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Ethel Jo Ann (Saltsgiver) Popson, whom he married June 10, 1972. He is survived by children: Kimberly Popson; Kenneth (Jennifer Lafferty) Popson; Kelly Popson; Kristina (George Leitz, Jr.) Popson, all of Patton; grandson Kaleb Popson; brother Robert Popson, Clymer; sister Elizabeth Coke, Flint MI and numerous nieces and nephews. He was a graduate of Penns Manor High School. He served in with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, receiving the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal with 1960 Device, Good Conduct Medal and one Overseas Bar. George retired as a coal miner from Barnes and Tucker Coal Company. He was a lifetime member of Patton Fire Company, Carrolltown American Legion Post 506, Patton VFW John White Post 779, serving with their honor guard and was an active volunteer for the nonprofit B.A.D.G.E. He was known as Pappy George and loved by many. He enjoyed watching his grandson racing dirt bikes, craft shows and camping. Friends will be received Tuesday, November 30, 2021 from 4:00 pm until the 8:00 pm Funeral Service at Stevens Funeral Home, Inc., 1004 North Fifth Avenue Patton, by Rev. Jerzy Auguscik, OFM. Interment St. Mary’s Cemetery, Patton. In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to B.A.D.G.E., Patton VFW or Patton Fire Company. Full military rites will be accorded by John White VFW Post 779, Walter McCoy American Legion Post 614 and other local veterans organizations.
